Is it better to buy a Used Jet Ski from Dealership or Private Seller?
Pros and Cons Buying watercraft/boat from Dealer VS Private owner
1. Guaranteed Running Condition
Private sellers often put their vessel for sale due to breakdowns. Unfortunately, most of them will not honestly tell you about the potential problems with the watercraft.
Whereas dealers sell vessels repaired, serviced, and ready for water.
In addition, you will receive complete instructions on how to use and maintain your new jet ski. I will explain to you everything about the specific nuances of your particular jet ski model: I will show you in person how to properly launch it on water; what to pay attention to when you ride it; how to maintain and what to pay attention to. You will know everything you need to know to keep it in a good running condition for years!
2. Ride It Before You Buy It
Most private sellers won’t provide an opportunity to test drive a watercraft before closing the deal. There can be many reasons for this. For example, as simple as a person’s unwillingness to spend their time on trips to the water. But another motive can also be a presence of hidden breakdowns they don’t want you to reveal during a full speed ride.
A dealer, on the other hand, will provide a test drive to a convinced buyer with a serious intention to complete the purchase but who wants to ensure proper running condition of a vessel. It’s a normal practice for Dealers to ask such buyers for a small deposit upfront. This is reasonable because a test drive requires significant time and effort from the seller’s side, such as time, boat rams fees, and gas. In addition, the presence of a deposit allows sellers to weed out other customers who are less interested in buying, but rather looking for a free ride to test out different models.
3. Payment method
Private sellers accept only cash while dealers can provide more convenient payment options. You can have a safer transaction by paying by check at any day of the week and avoid trips to the Bank with piles of cash.
4. After purchase assistance
Private sellers sell vessels “As Is” so good luck in getting some kind of support from the seller after the deal is closed.
A reputable dealer guarantees support and is more responsive to problems from former clients. Dealers prefer to build long-term relationships with customers who may come back in the form of additional service, maintenance, mechanic service, or future upgrade.
It’s also good to have a knowledgeable person for advice especially if you’re a first time watercraft owner. Newbies tend to make basic mistakes which can be costly but avoided by simply asking for advice from an expert.
5. Clean Paperwork
There are a lot of jet skis with no Titles that people acquire and then are stuck with. Many private sellers are trying to get rid of such vessels.
Dealers are required by law to provide clean necessary paperwork to a buyer. So there is lower risk for a buyer to get into a cheesy deal or buy a watercraft they won’t be able to ever ride on water due to the lost title.
6. Realistic Pricing
In pursuit of avoiding overpaying to a dealer you risk to pay more in the long run.
It’s true that a private seller is more likely to negotiate the price. However, you never know what are the true motives for such an allowance. Whether it’s the need for fast cash or desire to get rid of a problem.
On the contrary, sometimes sellers may overestimate the price because they have emotional attachment to the vessel or recently had additional spendings which they pass over by including to the sale price.
Dealers price to sell. Market value is Not defined by NADA estimation tool. Market value is represented by a real-world price that is currently listed for sale for that particular year, make, model, condition, and allowance for the invested repairs and maintenance.
