How To Restore or Replace a Lost Jet Ski or Boat Title in Virginia

The procedures for PWC or Vessel Title restoration depends on the reason why you do not have a Title on hand

While there could be various reasons why you may be missing the Title, the most common are:

1) You bought a jet ski from a non-Titling State

Resolution: Look for the Registration card instead. Non-Titling States treat Registration Cards as Titles. And in Virginia you are allowed to obtain a Title on your name, If you provide this Registration Card and a Bill of Sale. The card looks like a small ID-size plastic card with the information about the jet ski and its owner (search in the vessel’s storage compartments because this card is often required to be present during rides).

If you don’t find this card, you may contact me to have your Title Rebuild.

2) You lost your own Title which was on your name

Resolution for this case is simple, you can restore it by requesting a Duplicate of Title from DWR. It will cost you $10 Titling fee.

3) You purchased a jet ski or boat with a non-clean Title

This happens when you buy from a person who has a Title but it has someone’s information filled in a Buyer’s Section so it’s not clean. DGIF will not accept Titles with blots and corrections so that Title can’t be used regardless whether you have Bill of Sale or not.

Resolution: There is a long process full of paperwork. This is a situation when you may consider Title Rebuilding Service.

4) You Initially acquired a jet ski or vessel without a Title

Examples:

  • If you bought it, the seller may have lost the Title. Or the Seller has never registered or Titled the PWC on their name and they do not have a Title from the previous owner.
  • You legally received the watercraft into possession as a gift, form of payment, or abandoned on your property.
